Summer Festivals & Events in Whitby

Friday 12th July, 2019 by hostandstay

Whitby, on the North Yorkshire Coast, is packed with quintessential British charm as well popular events and activities. In today’s blog, we’ll highlight everything you need to know about Whitby including fun things to do and perfect places to visit.

Whitby oozes nostalgic charm. The lively sea front is bursting with amusements and shops, so it’s easy to lose track of time. With a beautiful Blue Flag beach and fish restaurants renowned for their catch of the day, Whitby is the perfect coastal spot. Narrow cobbled streets veer off from the busy quay, showcasing small boutiques filled with crafts, antiques, confectionary and famous Whitby Jet jewellery. You’ll eventually wind up at 199 steps which lead up to the Church of St. Mary and the gothic Whitby Abbey, which was Bram Stoker’s inspiration for the literary classic Dracula.

Step out of Whitby and you’ll discover the quiet and peaceful North York Moors National Park. Explore the countryside and you’ll find small villages like Goathland, also known as the home of ‘Heartbeat’, and Grosmont where you can experience the North York Moors Steam Railway.

As we continue into the summer months, Whitby comes alive with quirky festival weekends. Here’s a selection of our favourites…

The Great Vintage Seaside Fair is perfect for lovers of antiques and retro pieces. With over 50 stalls selling vintage fashion and homeware from 1920s to 1980s, you’re in for a real treat. You’ll find the fair at the Whitby Pavilion on the West Cliff on Saturday 20th July from 9:30am and Sunday 21st July from 4pm.

The Whitby and District Lions Beer Festival returns this year on 25th July. There will be 30 real beers and ciders available to sample as well as fresh, locally produced food. The four-day festival celebrates its 10th year this year so it’s bigger and better than ever!

Entry to the festival costs £5 and this includes a commemorative glass tankard (to keep), a festival real ale and cider guide and one beer token. Interested? The event starts at 12pm each day from Thursday 25th July to Sunday 28th July at The Whitby Mission & Seafarers Centre.

The Whitby Traction Engine Rally is jam packed with events. With Tractor Pulling, Steam Engines, Classic Cars, Vintage Tractors, Classic Motorcycles, Fairground Organs, Miniature Steam Engines, Stationary Engines and Vintage Commercials, this is literally a traction engine lover’s dream!

As well as all things mechanical, the weekend also includes the Scarborough Fair Collection with dancers, singers and musicians. On the Saturday night, there’s a huge firework display which is bound to impress. There is also a licensed bar, catering, trade stands and funfairs.

The two day event starts on 2nd August. Be sure to get tickets here before they go!

Whitby Regatta returns on Saturday 10th August until Monday 12th August. With an array of fun events including yacht racing, motor cycle and quads gymkhana and a spectacular fireworks display, Whitby will be bustling with excitement.

Whitby Folk Festival is an amazing celebration of music and dance starting on 17th August. You can choose from over 300 concerts over 7 days spread across 50 venues with a Dance Extravaganza in the Spa Pavilion on Sunday 18th August.
