Port Mulgrave was once famous for ironstone mining, which transformed this part of the coast in the mid-nineteenth century. There were ironstone seams in the coastal rocks, and also inland at nearby Grinkle, and the sheltered bay made a good harbour for boats coming to ship the ironstone out to Jarrow. The industry is long gone, and little remains of the harbour, but the shoreline at Port Mulgrave stands as a reminder of the industry that once characterised this coast and provides fantastic cliff walks to both Whitby and Saltburn.
Visit the seaside towns of Saltburn, Staithes, Whitby and Scarborough, or why not head in land and explore the infamous North Yorkshire Railway. The North Yorkshire Moors Railway is a preserved historic railway stretching for 18 miles through the heart of the North York Moors National Park, from Pickering via Levisham, Newton Dale and Goathland to Grosmont, with a further 6 mile extension over Network Rail’s Esk Valley line to Whitby and occasionally Battersby. It is the largest preserved heritage railway in the UK in terms of route mileage operated and passenger numbers.
The Yorkshire coastline encompasses some of the UK’s most rugged and charming countryside, from tiny fishing villages clinging to rocky cliffs to glorious stretches of white sand and family-friendly seaside resorts, with everything from windswept abbeys to the county’s best fish and chips.
Explore our awesome beaches, get chilly feet if you brave the sea, and take a chance to lose yourself in the natural beauty of North Yorkshire.
Hinderwell is the closest village.
Guests have access to the full property.
The keys to the property are accessed via a secure key safe and full details will be provided shortly before your arrival date. There is private parking for up to two cars.
Lovely location would recommend to family and friends.
The view is lovely. It was great to eat all our meals looking at the sea. Beautiful walk to Runswick Bay to swim, eat delicious ice cream and buy brilliant bread. Delightful tea room and art show in the old school at Hinderwell.
Beds comfortable and attractive bedrooms. Kitchen functional. Lots of hot water
Indoors a little bit dark so might be less good in bad weather.
Lovely and quiet, beautiful view. Would love to stay for longer.
Only slept in the bed upstairs, very comfortable but beware of the beams. Husband 6'2" and a bit of an issue for a man of 65 who needs a pee in the middle of the night with the bathroom downstairs to avoid in the middle of the night.
Parking not right outside the door, but plenty of space for a Jag but a bit of negotiating to avoid the walls.
Everything you need for a great stay. The bath needs grab handles as it is quite high and nothing to grab to get in and out when you are older, and bearing in mind this may be the reason you have chosen a bungalow.
Will be back as soon as we can.
Location was excellent. Quiet but lovely sea views and easy access to the cliff top walks to both Staithes and Runswick Bay. Good chip shop and 2 pubs an easy walk away on the village
Not as clean as it could have been
Wonderful holiday stay, great location, fabulous Accommodation. Home from home will come again
No dislikes. We loved everything on this holiday, apart from cold weather
We had a fantastic stay here. Would definitely stay again.
Location lovely, good views . Comfortable and well equipped .
Lovely place, well furnished with everything you need.
Warm, comfortable and the log burner was a nice addition.
Host and Stay were a pleasure to deal with and check in was a breeze.
Location is great for a quiet getaway and the views are fantastic.
Would book again in the future.
5 stars across the board!
Lovely and clean property with the best views overlooking the sea. In close proximity to Staithes, Runswick Bay, and Whitby, and the Cleveland Way passes directly in front of the bungalow. So for those keen to walk it (or a portion of it), this is the perfect spot.
Great communication from the hosts, and we wanted for nothing. Looking forward to staying again in the future!
Lovely cottage in a perfect location for exploring the North Yorkshire coast.
Very comfortable and well equipped cottage with lovely views over the North Sea. A short walk from the Cleveland Way coastal path. Communication from the host was excellent throughout.
Lovely, comfortable, stylish bungalow with truly stunning views of the coast. The sunrises & sunsets are spectacular!
The location is ideal for accessing The Cleveland Way with delightful cliff top walks both north & south from the bungalow. Locally, in walking distance there's a pub which serves food (closed Mondays) & 10 minutes by car in nearby Staithes there's a well-stocked Coop for essentials, several cafes & shops & a lovely harbourside pub where we enjoyed a delicious meal in convivial surroundings.
Enjoyable stay in great cottage. Location spot on to explore the area. Coastal walk to Staithes was beautiful. Would highly recommend to friends.
the setting and the views out to sea. also liked the decor and the comfortable bed. Near an excellent restaurant, No. 20, within walking distance! also pub in Hinderwell - The Badger Hounds was good
Surprised we were not told in advance about the long standing tv reception issue. Could do with some sharper kitchen knives and a small frying pan.
We had a great stay. If you like walking it’s a great place to walk the Cleveland way. You can reach the path in a 2-3 min walk from the flat. We walked to Whitby bay which is a 12 mile walk. Stunning coastal views. We also walked on the north York moors which was a 20 min drive away. I’d recommend this place if you love walking;)
Lovely cozy place in great location, great for coastal walks.
The bed and sofa were very comfortable!
It was in a great location
Cleaner was still on site at 3pm, and she hadn't hoovered in the kitchen or lounge area
The side where the door lock is could have been made a little more presentable with some pot plants or flowers
The grass could of done with a cut and tidied up a bit
Views where great
The front door was very difficult to open and close with the key and took a lot of messing each time. Other than that all was good
Fab location with lots of lovely walks close by. Loved our stay.
Fantastic location. Missing waking up to the sound of the sea!
Great setting, beautiful view of the sea.
Great for a bit of peace & quiet!
No stair gate so if you’ve got a little one toddling about then beware!
Great stay. Very comfortable with fantastic outdoor space and views
Excellent place to stay - incredible location with lovely views and outside space. Great communication throughout.
Lovely Bungalow in a ideal location just up from the Cleveland Way. Brilliant view out to sea as you eat breakfast on the raised decking at the rear of the property. We had a relaxing weeks stay and would return.
With the Cleveland Way running past the bottom of the bungalow, it's perfectly positioned for an lovely walk over to Staithes (Cod and Lobster calamari was amazing) and Runswick Bay (lovely beach), and a longer walk to Whitby. Excellent communication, very clean property with everything we needed. We had a wonderful beer/meal at the local Badger Hounds and the beer is good at the Brown Cow. There is a chip shop but it's only open a few days a week (didn't try). It's a beautiful part of the world with stunning drives wherever you go. Whitby was way too crowded, for us personally. One of our highlights was Saltburn on Sea with a simple pier, super beach, good cafes (an amazing Cornish pasty stand), lovely town to walk around with gardens and woodland. Coming back to the cottage via the Cleveland Way, or car each day was a real treat!
What a lovely little cottage in a delightful setting with superb views out to see. The place was clean and tidy and had a nice balcony outside to sit and gaze at the surroundings. It's right on the Cleveland Way so Staithes is around 1.5 miles and Runswick Bay about 2 miles so easily reached with a short stroll along the cliffs. The cottage had everything that is needed for a cosy stay and the beds are super comfy. I would thoroughly recommend staying here and would very happily return!
Perfect for walks on the Cleveland Way
Lovely, clean bungalow in a great location.
Lovely quiet location with direct views of the sea. Well equipped and comfortable accommodation. Clean. Nice bedding and towels. Fantastic that Cleveland way at bottom of garden. 2 miles walk to Runswick Bay and Staithes. We will be back!
We very much enjoyed the local coast line and the very quiet area. The cottage was very good and had an excellent sea view at the back. All the appliances and heating worked very well and we very much enjoyed our stay.
The key safe wouldn't initially open and the cover needs replacing.
Did expect a better COVID 19 cleaning package to be provided.
We were very lucky with the weather - mid April and glorious. The cottage is recently renovated and smart however I like a lot of light so the central section of the cottage could be thought of dark - however the views from the patio are memorable and the kitchen gets the evening light - worth the gamble off season - high season would be amazing. Local visits are numerous - enjoy.
Beautiful cottage with breath-taking views. We had a fabulous stay with coastals walks to both Staithes and Runswick Bay from the doorstep. The car didn't move the entire time we were there! The deck and garden are lovely and we enjoyed breakfast on the deck in the morning and drinks at the bottom of the garden in the afternoon, catching the evening sun. The cottage is spacious and has everything you need. Hope to return in the future!
The location was good, lovely views of the sea and very quiet with a decent garden. The indoor log burner was also nice especially when the snow started. The bed was very comfortable. Shower was good.
The toilet seat was a nightmare, loose and wonky which made sit down operations difficult! It would be an easy fix to swap the seat. The oven wasn’t great, it was very old and the bottom oven didn’t work at all, while the top grill also didn’t work. Also an easy sort!
Really good location. Quiet from all the traffic and near to some nice walks. A nice spacious bungalow would definitely stay again
Location is excellent and general cleanliness of property good. Needed wood for fire but heating was good. Top bedroom was very loud due to the gale force winds flowing through the velux window.
Quiet situation. Easy parking. Comfortable atsy
Leather sofas. Downstairs bathroom. Not especially to our taste
Overall the property was nice. However, there was issues with the cleanliness of the bathroom, and items in the kitchen that needed to be washed before use. Pictures can be provided if required.
We were also surprised that we had only been left two logs for the burner, and had to purchase some more on our second day.
Given the price of the stay, we did expect some more personal touches other than a pint of milk.
This cottage is fantastic. Nice quiet location but close to a small village with pubs and chip shop. Accommodation was very clean and well equipped. Would highly recommend
The cottage is in an excellent location, with the opportunity to walk to both Staithes and Runswick Bay, and has views out over the back garden to the sea. The team were responsive when we were missing a couple of items, main thing to note is that beds were smaller than expected.
Good sized space, clean, tastefully well-furnished; plenty of outdoor space; great location for visits along the coast; walks from the door... highly recommend!
Lovely place, with great views and easy access to all of the North Yorkshire attractions. The accommodation leads right onto the Cleveland Way paths up and down the coast. Good comms throughout but to be honest we had no issues with the accommodation.
The location was superb we loved it!
It just felt dirty and unfinished!
The garden was “unkempt” - the grass and pits were overgrown with rubbish dumped at the bottom of the garden. The washing line was still up with the “pegs” still in situ from a previous occupation. The bathroom felt tacky and dirty. It would have been helpful if we could have hung our clothes in the wardrobe but this was stashed with old televisions, wine rack, dust sheets etc. There was an item of clothing on the floor by the bed from a previous occupant which makes me wonder if the bungalow had in fact been cleaned properly before we took occupation. The drawers were dirty with unclean oven plates. It would have also been nice to arrive with logs in the basket for the fire - definitely lacking “the little things” it just felt like it was a holiday let - not really anything special.
Great location, with lovely views.
Great stay. Very clean. Close to Whitby and access to the local beach.
We had a wonderful short break at Ammonite cottage. After our planned holiday abroad fell through due to COVID, we found that this place was (inexplicably) available at quite short notice. The photos looked very impressive, but don't do full justice to the setting and location, which was stunning. The views over the sea and across to the neighbouring cliffs were sublime. Literally the last properties to the coast, with the Cleveland Way passing directly at the end of the beautifully kept garden. The property itself was easy to find, along with ample parking, clearly marked, down a quiet cul-de-sac. The interior is tastefully furnished and was spotlessly clean, having clearly been recently decorated. The loft conversion was particularly wonderful - much more spacious than we had expected and with great views through the Velux windows. The host provided all necessary information to support our stay well in advance, and check in was straightforward (using the provided tablet). They were not obtrusive at all, and we were left to our own devices throughout. The location was great, directly above the interesting derelict mining harbour of Port Mulgrave, but positioned perfectly to explore up and down the coast. The beautiful harbour of Staithes and beack of Runswick Bay were both within about 5 minutes drive either direction up the coast, and places like Saltburn and Whitby were only an easy 20 minute drive away. Overall we were delighted with our stay, and hope to return soon!
Lovely place to stay, good access to Staithes and Runswick Bay, and not far from Whitby.
We enjoyed a lovely few days in Port Mulgrave. The house has a lovely view out to sea and was in a great location to reach other beaches and places to visit!
Excellent location. Beautiful and peaceful outside space. Very handy for Staithes and Runswick Bay. Just a note to those who aren’t so sure footed - would not recommend the path down to Port Mulgrave cove - some very steep, slippery and unstable sections, though it’s an interesting visit for the more intrepid. If we returned we would choose to walk along the coast path instead.
Beautiful setting and very comfortable. A perfect little getaway.
