Trip Details
The Space
Upon entering Hoggarths Retreat, you’ll be wowed by the modern and bright feel which flows throughout the property. You’ll notice the impeccable interiors as soon as you step into the hallway as you’re welcomed by quirky patterned flooring and clean, minimalist walls.
Take the first door to the right and you’ll find the living area. This is the perfect place to enjoy quality time with friends and family. Relax on the large, corner sofa and switch on the flat screen TV to enjoy the perks of NOW TV.
Light floods in from the glass double doors at the other end of the room and the glass roof above. Here, you’ll find the open plan kitchen and dining area. This modern space is homely and stylish. The glossy kitchen is fully equipped with an oven, hob, fridge freezer, microwave, kettle, coffee machine, dishwasher and washing machine – so you’ll have everything you could need for your stay.
The large dining table is perfect for family breakfasts and evening meals with friends. In the summer, you can open the doors and let the warm breeze in. In the winter months, you’ll feel cosy and warm as the dark nights draw closer. Outside you'll find an enclosed, paved area.
Head back to the hallway and you’ll find a modern downstairs cloakroom under the stairs.
Upstairs on the first floor, you’ll be greeted by two beautifully furnished bedrooms and the main bathroom.
The first bedroom is a stylish haven with large glass doors showcasing rural views. There is a rusty orange colour scheme which is complemented perfectly with the copper bedside tables and lamps.
The second bedroom has rustic features whilst still keeping the same stunning aesthetic as the rest of the house. Striking smoked glass lamps sit either side of the comfy bed. Unique artwork, premium bed linen and plush cushions help to make this room feel relaxing and warm. This room also boasts a modern en-suite bathroom which includes a large, walk in shower.
The main bathroom has a seriously stylish feel. It features a striking free-standing bath and luxurious textured tiles.
Upstairs on the second floor, you’ll find two more bedrooms. The first bedroom at the top of the stairs has double doors which open to reveal amazing rural views. It has a huge, comfortable bed and a desk area. You’ll also find an en-suite which has a bath and overhead shower.
The last bedroom has a green colour scheme which creates a truly tranquil space. It is complemented perfectly with matt black accessories, abstract artwork and a wicker light. It also features an en-suite with a large walk in shower.
Neighborhood
Located in Spital Bridge in Whitby, Hoggarths Retreat is less than a 10-minute walk to the town centre. There you’ll find narrow, medieval streets dotted with boutiques, pubs and fish restaurants. You can climb the famous 199 steps up to the Church of Saint Mary. You can also discover the renowned ruined Whitby Abbey, which was the inspiration for Bram Stoker’s gothic novel ‘Dracula’.
On the other side of the River Esk, you’ll come across cosy pubs, fun arcades and even more fish restaurants on Pier Road. Venture along the lively road and you’ll reach the beautiful, blue flag West Cliff Beach which is lined with idyllic beach huts.
Getting Around
The centre of Whitby is a short ten-minute walk from Hoggarths Retreat.
Whitby train station is less than 15-minutes away on foot so villages and towns along the North Yorkshire coast can easily be reached via rail. There’s also a taxi rank in close proximity to the train station.
There are plenty of bus routes throughout Whitby. Hop on the X4 and you can visit beautiful coastal villages like Sandsend, Runswick Bay and Staithes. The X93 travels along the coast to Scarborough. The 95 route features plenty of quaint villages, such as Grosmont and Lealholm.

The house was in perfect location, not too far from the centre so nice and quiet.
Spacious for 7 people & 1 dog. Well equipped kitchen. Beds were comfortable & very clean.
Only a couple of things really. Missing a bread knife. Could do with a lick of paint in some rooms. The taps are very unstable in the top floor room with the free standing bath.

Thanks for a lovely stay. This is our second time here and think that the location is ideal for Whitby and the surrounding area. Great views out the back bedrooms. The beds are very comfortable and it’s great to have your own bathrooms.

Newly built property ideal for a group of friends or extended family visit. Well equipped, modern kitchen and nice open-plan living area. Beds are huge and comfortable, each bedroom has their own bathroom. The whole place was very clean. Good location just 10 minutes walk to the swing bridge in town centre. Great that we could bring our dog along.
Large stains on the lounge area carpet are very noticeable and should be cleaned or carpet replaced. Not a good first impression! There are no drawers or wardrobes in bedrooms. Big bath looks nice but had no plug and the lack of a shower screen makes hard to avoid getting a wet floor. Outside space is limited. Only one parking space (we had 3 cars and found parking up the steep side road, about half a mile away). Not really enough seating for 8 adults in the lounge area, better for up to 6 max. Could have done with extra tea towels and a hand towel in the kitchen.

Breakfast not applicable. Great Location.
Would have preferred a shower to the free standing bath in one bedroom

It is a lovely property, very well maintained and presented which met all the needs of three couples who stayed there for three nights. We would have no hesitation in recommending it for a visit to Whitby.

great location, grateful for the parking spot!
upon entering it stunk! smelt like dogs and was stuffy. needed a good airing and a clean!
couldn’t believe there were breadcrumbs on the floor in the kitchen, on the table and in the cutlery drawer! cutlery was dirty, lipstick marks around one of the glasses and one of the cups, cooked in cheese on the edge of one of the pots.
we had to start our vacation, which was to celebrate my dads 70th birthday, by cleaning the whole house! was appalled by the colour of the water after mopping the kitchen and hall way floor - it was worse than the colour of pond water!
stains on the carpet in the lounge and the cushions smelt of dog!

The accommodation was lovely, spacious and clean. It is situated close to everything that you would want to see in Whitby. Guide was easy to follow and all instructions given were clear and also easy to follow.
The only downside was the parking as you could only have one car but the accommodation can have 8 people stay. That said wasn't too far for 24hr parking.

the location of Hoggarths Retreat was superb! It was very clean and was perfect for our group/family of 6 Adults
the only thing which was uncomfortable for our group was no clothes rail in 2 rooms and bedside tables with draws would have been easier, as some of us had to live out of a suitcase

Excellent property, great location and ideal for our needs.
As seems to be the usual case there are insufficient comfy seats for the number of guests the property can accommodate. Fortunately there were only 6 of us and we struggled to fit comfortably on the sofa. Not sure where the other 2 guests could have sat.
We had to ask for wine glasses and saucepans, which was a little disappointing as this should gave been checked before our arrival. They were provided very promptly the following day.

great location and a really lovely property!
furnished nicely and ideal for our family break. the en-suites were just so useful.
clean and well equipped it showed no sign of being used extensively by other visitors.
also useful was the abbey car park up the hill for the other cars in our family party.
car park was slightly tight for my Land Rover but not a huge issue.

The location was very good. 5min walk to centre. Lovely Fish and Chip shop just down the road.
It could have been a lot cleaner.
Maybe Housekeeping need to be spot checked.
Fridge not cleaned. Dried milk on shelf.
Freezer to frozen to use.
Hoover needed cleaning. Smell wasn't good.
All carpets needed a good hoover. Downstairs carpet needed a clean.
Shower on 1st floor the pipe was split so unusable.
All the lamps needed dusting.

The space and standard of furnishings were excellent. We travelled with 2 other couples. The open plan living and kitchen area were ideal. The bedroom and bathrooms all spacious , clean and modern. We would all recommend the property.
There wasn't anything we didn't like about the property or location.

Excellent location with all shops pubs and restaurants all within a short walk. Easy to access the costal paths. House was nice but a little under equipped - it needs more cutlery and utensils. The baking trays were all dirty. More cups needed when there’s 8 people. Fairly clean throughout so just a little short of being a fantastic property. Parking was a slight issue when the town is busy as only one allocated space at the property.

Fantastic location, very clean, comfortable, plenty of space for 8 of us. Great bathrooms. Small outdoor seating area with nice garden furniture.
The ladies in the group would have appreciated more clothes hanging spaces, not really anywhere to hang our ‘going out’ clothes in the bedrooms except in the main bedroom on the top floor.

Our stay at Hoggarth's Retreat was exactly as described in the listing - the house is modern, clean and well equipped with lots of facilities/utensils, and in a great location. The hosts were very accommodating, and were able to provide additional items - high chairs and travel cots - on request. They were easy to contact both before arriving and when we had a question on arrival.

Location great, a short walk into the main area which was no problem especially as there was a pub en route (middle earth). Riverside chip shop was excellent, we had a takeaway on our first night.
The house was lovely and spacious, there were a few of us so having 4 bathrooms was great including a downstairs toilet. Managed to squeeze 2 cars (one was small) in the allocated space as it was right outside the house so not blocking anyone. Paid parking available on the street.
The team were very responsive to questions beforehand and gave clear instructions about arrival and departure.
We would definitely stay here again.
Nothing really, there were a couple of issues with the cleaning which we picked up with the team who were very responsive.

Good points; House spotlessly clean. Beds are lovely and comfy, bathrooms are beautiful and well equipped. House is in a great location, few minutes walk to centre of Whitby. Great pubs/restaurants in Whitby, The Starr Inn Harbour, Abbey Wharf and Horse and Griffin, ate in them all lovely, nice cafe / bistro think it was called Sanders Yard ate there twice and it was lovely/Bad points, No frying pan ( couldnt do fried eggs ) only 2 other pans.Living area would be a bit small if there were 8 people in the house, there were only 4 of us so it was fine.

Loved everything about this property. the house was spotless. We have never stayed in a property that we have had to put all of our cleaning materials back into the car as everything was supplied. The beds were so comfortable it was a challenge to rise and explore.
Could have known before to take towels for downstairs toilet and kitchen as not supplied. Saucepans were a challenge as we cooked in on an evening. Very small for a party of four and had to purchase some larger ones. Easily remedied . Will take our own on our next visit.

The house and the rooms were fantastic, the location was spot on, we had such a great time, we managed to get both cars parked outside the property as well which was very good, I think it was slightly more expensive that some other properties in a similar bracket but all in all was perfect.
There wasn't much space in the rooms to hang clothes and put clothes away so spent much of the time living out of a suitcase. That was the only downside to this stay so please don't let this put you off!

The furnishings, the extra large beds. The great location was perfect within a short stroll in the main area of Whitby. This was great for teenagers in our party as they could do their own thing. The showers in all rooms were always hot and powerful which is a bonus when 7 of you getting ready on a morning. The handy parking space right outside the property. We had 2 cars in our party, for the other car I booked a space just up the road at Sainsburys via
Your parking space app was only £6 for our 3 night stay, hassle free and the other party dropped us there as only 3 minutes by car from the property or a 15/20 min walk saved searching for a space in August in the car parks in Whitby town.
Disappointed don't feel the cleaning was exceptional in current climate. Dust on the splashback in kitchen, spillage marks over the lounge radiator, furniture just hovered around not moved. Kitchen well equipped but no oven gloves so suffered a few burns trying to use the tea towel to remove items from oven.
The backyard needed a tidy up weeds removing and a clean up of the patio slabs to remove green mould.

We were amazed at the quality and cleanliness of this 3 storey, pet friendly house. The bathrooms were superb and the beds were large and very comfy. It is situated a 10 minute flat walk out of the main tourist area, which is difficult thing to find in Whitby. Happy to recommend this fledgling (we assume) accommodation but do have some constructive comments to share:1) No need for the cloak and dagger parking instructions about having to call on arrival. Just tell us to park in the space outside of the house window. After a long journey, the last thing people want is to stress about whether they need to find and pay for public parking. 2) Dress up the back yard a bit. Nobody will sit out there in its current state. 3) Put a frying pan in the kitchen. 4) Charging a £75 cleaning fee, then asking people to clean down worktops and remove and bag all bedding and rubbish, prior to checkout Is not acceptable. We wouldn’t dream of leaving the house in a poor state but doing the cleaner’s job and paying for the privilege doesn’t sit right. None of these requests were in the booking terms and conditions. We don’t want to put a bad slight on the house, as we think it’s a lovely place to stay but it has a few managerial issues that could easily be solved.

Lovely rooms and spotless, which is unusual for a dog friendly house. Not too far out of the main tourist area. Good wifi throughout the 3 storeys. Close to good chippy (Riverside fisheries).
Back yard was poor but wouldn’t have sat out there anyway. Bit awkward to park with a large car and cloak and dagger parking instructions seemed unnecessary. Just need to tell us to park next to front window, instead of having to call on arrival. Would have been useful to have a frying pan too.

Home Truths
Hoggarths Retreat is located on a new development which can be tricky to find. We will send over a Google Pin of the exact location prior to arrival - we recommend referring to this to help you find the property.
If you are travelling with more than one vehicle, you will need to park in a pay and display carpark or nearby free parking. Full details would be provided prior to arrival.
The property has three floors so you will need to climb stairs during your visit.
