The Space
Upon entering The Observatory, you will be captivated by the bright and airy feel which flows throughout the apartment. Head left along the hallway and you’ll find the large, open plan living / dining area.

The living area features comfy, plush sofas and a Smart TV so you’ll feel at home in no time at all. The dining area is perfect for entertaining friends and enjoying family meals. You’ll notice amazing artwork on the walls – from bright painted pieces to subtle photographs of the local area. In the summer months, you can open the balcony doors and let the warm air drift in. Out on the balcony, you’ll be wowed by the views. It’s the ideal place to enjoy a morning coffee and watch the world go by.

Head to the incredible viewing tower and you’ve found the haven. Tall floor to ceiling arched windows curve around the tower and provide the best views. Watch as the waves lap the shore and the birds swoop over the cliffs in the distance.

Back down the stairs and past the living area, you’ll find the kitchen. With a microwave, oven, kettle, coffee machine, toaster, refrigerator and dishwasher – you’ll have everything you need for your stay.

The main bedroom is spacious and relaxing. Light streams in from the windows which are set within the quirky angles of the room. There is ample space for your belongings with built in wardrobes and a chest of drawers. To the left, you’ll find the en-suite bathroom which features a walk-in shower.

The second bedroom features the same unique angles, with a large window facing you as you enter the room. The neutral colour scheme is relaxing, and you’ll enjoy your sleep in the comfy double bed.

The main bathroom has a rustic feel with muted green panelling and natural colours. The large space features a deep bath so you can enjoy a long, relaxing soak in the tub during your stay.

The Observatory is located in the charming Victorian Spa town of Saltburn-by-the-Sea on the North Yorkshire coast.

Located in the heart of the town, the apartment is only a short walk from the beach and lower promenade. Take the oldest functioning cliff lift in the UK down to the promenade and you’ll arrive at the 208-metre pier which stretches out into the sea. The long sandy shores are overlooked by colourful boutique beach huts and high cliffs tower in the distance.

The Observatory is close to all local amenities including independent shops, bars, restaurants and bistros.

Saltburn has plenty of beautiful walks too. The Valley Gardens are a maze of paths and tracks which wind through the flowers and woodland. If you want to explore further, The Cleveland Way National Trail is over 100 miles long and the lovely Saltburn is featured. If you fancy a 17.5 mile jaunt, start at Saltburn and walk your way to Sandsend. This walk is a great way to explore the North Yorkshire coastline and the views are beautiful!

Getting Around
The Observatory is within walking distance of all that Saltburn has to offer and within 30 minutes’ drive time of Staithes, Whitby, Middlesbrough and the North Yorkshire Moors.

Saltburn Train Station is a short walk away and has routes to Longbeck, Redcar, Middlesbrough and Darlington with connecting trains to Newcastle, York, Leeds, Manchester and London.

There are plenty of bus routes throughout Saltburn. Hop on the Arriva North East route and you can visit beautiful coastal villages like Staithes, Runswick Bay and Whitby. The Moorsbus route has drop offs at Newton Under Roseberry, Great Ayton, Stokesley and Helmsley.

View was amazing as was size of property
Property Tired, key safe was confusing about 20 on wall and not marked with number..
Outside dangerous on ledge old furniture out on ledge and metal railings very bery corroded.
Wires hanging out of ceiling.
Kitchen need ripping out as work tops in hygienic.

Great location, easy to find and easy to access. amazing views

The Observatory was really unexpectedly huge and amazing. It certainly lived up to its penthouse name. In the photos, I assumed the Observatory area was a public space within the building. How wrong was I? Basically it's a huge 2 bedroom ensuite with a massive living room, a balcony and a big kitchen that also comes with an observatory. To access the observatory you walk all the way to the end of the apartment then through a curtained doorway, up the carpeted stairs to a very cosy observatory (albeit slightly cold in it due to no heating in the observatory).

The view here is second to none. Almost all windows in the Observatory are facing East, so we were able to watch sunrises every day whilst we were there. You are looking at the horizon above the sea with no obstruction so it's perfect.

The apartment has great heating and all the necessities you need for the stay. Hot water is decent - water pressure in the main bathroom was really low for a bit and then suddenly it was okay after about 5 minutes. WiFi through SKY is okay. There's no signal in the observatory though so using it as a workspace may be limited. We were too busy looking at the scenery so didn't even have the chance to use the TV!!

Some points to note:
- Bring an eye mask if you prefer to sleep in dark rooms. For some reason, there are no curtains on all the windows. Since they all face east, it gets super bright from 4 AM in the summer. Like the sun shines directly in your face sort of bright. REALLY CONFUSED ABOUT WHY THERE ARE NO CURTAINS?
- There were inadequate descriptions regarding the lockbox (for self-check-in) I assumed there was going to be 1 single lockbox waiting for me but it turned out there were like 10 various different locks on the wall. We arrived at like 2 PM and had to literally guess which one is the correct lockbox to use based on the passcode provided. (It's the one with a black cover covering the entire lockbox and uses the alphabet in the code, not just only numbers). The lockbox was so difficult to use because you need to press down really hard on each button, and it isn't a simple code + unlocks. You had to input the code correctly then pull a small lever and then turn a dial. It took me a good 10 minutes to figure out how to open it. You will only be provided with very basic instructions on how to operate the lockbox.
- This apartment is hosted through a management company so it offered less flexibility when it comes to checking out time. We enquired about a later checkout time in advance. However, they weren't able to cater to it.

Some fun bits:
- The entire building is old. Especially the area where the Observatory is located. You can tell the age through the decors in the lobby (interior for Observatory is modern). Based on the number of lockboxes stuck on the wall at the entrance to the apartment, I assume numerous units are rentals. I've only seen maintenance guys doing repairs on empty units during the day. The building gets very quiet and doesn't feel very occupied at all so it gets super eerie at night. It's quite a haunting experience, especially since you are looking at the cliff from a short distance. 11/10 amazing setting for a horror film night.

The apartment is amazing and the view is incredible. The bedrooms have no blinds and the fireplace is not working which is a bit of a shame, but besides that it's great.

The amazing views, great location and the observatory. The main living area was also great, and we loved the big mirrors that reflected the beautiful views. The hosts were on hand via text and kept in touch. The guidebook was also very helpful.
Both beds were quite uncomfortable. Bedroom 1 needs a new mattress and the bed in bedroom 2 was too small. The shower wasn’t very powerful and changed from scalding hot to icy cold. It was hard to get a suitable temperature in between.

The property is in a fantastic position with spectacular views. However considering this is being marketed as a high end apartment we were very disappointed with the interior. The observatory room is the highlight of the apartment, however there was no heating, no chandelier (only bare wires hanging) and the doors did not lock properly meaning water came in when it rained. These have all been highlighted by previous reviews and in the guest book so it is disappointing they have not been rectified. The bedrooms have no blinds or curtains. This is a basic requirement for a bedroom. I don't want to wake up when the sun rises or not be able to get to sleep because of the headlights of cars reflected on the ceiling. Again this has been mentioned by so many guests and it is possible to add blinds to the curved shaped windows. The kitchen is very outdated, poorly equipped and the utensils provided are of cheap quality. The coffee machine is a nice touch but useless if provided with the wrong type of coffee pods. The shower in the main bedroom is very flimsy and not what you would expect in a high end property. This property has such a lot of potential but it is badly let down by many details which have been pointed out over and over again but nothing done to fix them.

Not only a spectacular location with wonderful views but also very clean, comfortable bedding, chairs, sofas, utensils and good wifi. Great directions and exactly as described. 10/10.

Great views, spacious accommodation.
Kitchen not the best equipped but it wasn't a problem.

You would be hard pushed to find better views of Saltburn. An unbelievable apartment with so many amazing features and views from every window. The Observatory room was the perfect place for any time of day, breakfast and sunset were our favourites! The perfect location to explore town. Will certainly be back! An unforgettable weekend!

Fantastic location, beautiful views, super comfortable home. Says it all. Will definitely be back

This is a fabulous apartment, lovely clean and warm! Fabulous views and easy access to local shops, bars and restaurants.
I would recommend anyone staying bring an eye mask as there are no curtains on any of the windows! The small bedroom got very hot at night as the boiler was in the next room and my son struggled to sleep at times because of this!

Fabulous location and view.

Amazing views and lovely apartment to stay in. Would recomened to anyone

A breathtaking apartment in a stunning setting. The observatory room itself was a wonderful surprise with amazing views over the beach and cliffs.

Facilities and features throughout were generous, modern and plentiful - from large bedrooms, to test wifi to a full well stocked kitchen and great lounge/dining area. There was nothing we didn't have and we'll definitely be returning :)

Beautiful apartment with amazing views

Everything - loved the viewing tower. Sat in there alot. No heating so I took dressing gowns, fluffy socks & fleecy blankets. Great apartment, fabulous views, great location, fab walks & good food.

Jon And Sarah

What an amazing place. These must be the best views in Saltburn. And a lovely comfortable apartment with loss of space.

Nice place but be aware of the following, no curtains in the bedrooms so it like day light during the night with street lighting shinning into the bedrooms struggled to sleep. Only central heating you cannot use the open fire and visiting over the Christmas period even with the heating on is was chilling in the rooms. Second bedroom is only a 4 foot double bed. Sky TV box didn't work. Ceiling light missing from observatory. Dimmer switch in front room doesn't dim. You cannot use the staircase in the observatory. Additionally the day before departure you receive an email telling you departure requirements which includes wiping down all flat surfaces with anti bay wipes provided.

Just perfect

Great location for short or long coastal walks or just relaxing with the beautiful view.

For decades I've looked up at this apartment and wondered what it was like, and then I discovered it was available to hire - I wasn't disappointed. It was a really lovely place to spend my birthday. Saltburn-By-The-Sea is one of our favourite towns, and it's a short distance from our home, and we have always said it is the only place we would move to. For such a small picturesque place it has excellent facilities, and it was such a novelty for us to experience it as 'residents' rather than day trippers. We would definitely book again.

I think the apartment had been empty for the week before we arrived, and it felt quite cold for a while - having said that, it had been absolutely bitter as the north east had been rocked by terrible storms, so no wonder. But once I turned the thermostat up, and the warmth got through we were fine.

Lots of space.
There were no curtains at any of the windows. Several light bulbs missing. Sky TV did not work. Only 2 tea spoons. No chandelier in the tower as advertised. In fact there was no main light in there, just a bare wire hanging from the ceiling. Lots of dead flies on the floor in the tower, as if it hadn't been cleaned. Kitchen old and tired. For the amount we paid, I would have expected much better.

The flat itself was superbly located with amazing views. Beautiful building.
The smoke alarm was making a very loud beeping noise upon arrival which was unbearable. No one from the emergency contact number returned my call or voicemail.
The Observatory is marketed as a high end rental, and it therefore fell short of our expectations in terms of:
There was no welcome pack
No coffee capsules for the coffee machine
Only 1 tea towel and no dishcloth or antibacterial spray
1 cheap toilet roll
A hole in one of the towels
Light bulbs out
No ceiling light in the observatory, only a dangling wire (is this legal?!)
Half dead plants
A bad burn on the table
Tired fixtures and fittings
Some window panels were very dirty/the double glazing had gone
Dirty marks on the chairs
No blinds/ curtains in the bedrooms - difficult to sleep!

Very good

Absolutely stunning apartment with the best location andviews in town.

I found myself getting up at dawn just to watch the sunrise over the sea and the fields. The apartment is spacious for 4, super clean and well equipped. Parking was just outside and easy to find.

There's as much night life, breakfast and lunch as you need on the doorstep and the Seaview restaurant was a definite highlight.

we will be back

The observatory was a nice quirky feature with spectacular views
Lack of curtains in the bedrooms so very light in the morning.

Sitting in the conservatory looking out over the bay ?

The views and location were fantastic!
For this price level.. Needs a new kitchen hob, ( kitchen is probably 30 years old but it’s OK as long as you get a new hob!) needs new and all required kitchen utensils and decent pots/ pans …some were OK but others… no.. just a bunch of junk there..needs new bigger placemats, new queen bed( the double there is smaller than a normal double) .. provide more bath towels and tea towels. One is not enough for 4 nights. Give 2 sets of keys when more than 2 people are staying. Carpet needs cleaning. Cushions needed for outdoor rusty bistro chairs. They need to oil or put a finish on the wood tables (every drop of water leaves it’s mark). Basically, clear out everything that is making it look tatty. Views and location are great!!

Location and the observatory room
Towel rail in main bathroom. Handsoap in en-suite

Wi fi was frustrating having to sign in continually via a commercial set up. We also found having one set of keys for 4 adults very difficult as we were not out together. The agency was extremely unhelpful when we pointed this out as we are seasoned airbnb users (see our profile) and this is the first time we have not had two sets of keys.
Both beds were too small and of a poor quality for such a prestigious apartment. Also we feel a washing machine should be available as this would encourage longer visits.

Amazing views and lovely stay. A very good place to explore Saltburn and the local area from. Easy check in instructions.

Access to the apartment was accurately given and easy to follow. Check in was problem free.

The apartment was as described and the highlight was sitting in the Observatory watching the tide coming in and going out.

There are plenty of local walks and facilities that don't need the car and lots of great locations to visit within a 45 minute drive.

The Sky Plus box had no satellite signal. We reported this and Stay sent a representative within the hour to try and fix the problem. He tried everything possible but unfortunately a fix was not possible and the box remained unusable for the duration of our stay.

The apartment is in a great position.

Fab location with great views. The only downside is that neither of the bedrooms (both with numerous windows) have any curtains/ blinds resulting in being woken up at 5am everyday of the holiday by the light flooding in. The Stay reps were very helpful when I rang but said that the apartment doesn’t come with curtains or blinds. If this was changed it would have been a much better sleep/ stay!

Lovely place ,great location , Views are just breathtaking. make sure you take a set of binoculars

Location was excellent with fantastic views. Comfortable property , well furnished and spacious. The observatory was an extra special feature.
kitchen area was good but could have been improved by a little general maintenance and organisation of equipment.

The observatory room was my favourite place with exceptional views.
Nothing, this place is very special!

Really enjoyed our stay here, the views were spectacular. We found everything that we needed during our stay and would highly recommend this place to anyone looking for a few days of relaxation.

Unique apartment with Observatory delivering amazing out over the North Sea and Huntcliff
Immaculate 2 bed apartment , huge bathroom and modern kitchen

Beautiful, clean place! Highly recommend!

Honestly, this is an amazing place. Highly recommend.

The location and view is perfect. Great walks from the front door to the beach and beyond. Coffee and cake shop outside the side gate which is very convenient and worth a visit. Saltburn is worth a visit and we do come here a lot as the whole area is relaxing.
The drains smelled very bad constantly in the kitchen and main bathroom as well as the main toilet area. Light bulbs not working in the main bathroom. Three bulbs missing in the kitchen. The observatory which is the main feature has the main light missing but the electrical wires are hanging down from the ceiling. When it rains the windows in the observatory leak and a puddle of water forms. The sky box was not working. Netflix kept buffering. The WiFi is only free if you sign up for a marketing site this was not made clear on booking. It did mention social media account but that's not me unfortunately. I was told nearer the arrival date that the fire in the main room was not allowed to be used. The kitchen needs a hand grenade throwing in there as it outdated and the hob and oven is old. No fire blanket visible. The shower is of very poor quality and I would expect to see it in a caravan. When the downstairs flat is cooking the fragrance can be smelt in the main bedroom. The size of the bed is for hobbits and not very comfortable.

Everything about this property is top class

The location is absolutely fantastic ! Clean , spacious , the veiw from the Observatory room truly wonderful
We were disappointed not to be able to light the fire or go on the roof to the veiw tower . The property is slightly let down by the kitchen , compared to the rest of the apartment it is a little tired

The observatory is a truly beautiful place to stay, the views are just amazing!!!!

This is a spectacular place to stay! The observatory & balcony are wonderful. It’s comfy, clean, well located & was a hassle free check in/out. I hope we can come & stay again!
It’s worth noting the bedrooms didn’t have blinds/curtains so if you’re affected by the light when you sleep take an eye mask or something. We’d definitely recommend staying here.

The view is exceptional! The decor, upkeep and cleanliness of the property were a little disappointing in comparison.

Great location. Lovely neighbours that live there. Very tolerant of the likes of us. You are paying for the view so don’t expect everything to be 5 star. We enjoyed our stay very much but ate out all the time.

Great location and fabulous view. Highly recommended

Fabulous location

The views are incredible.
The main living area is comfortable, with good settees and a nice big table.
Plenty of space in the apartment.
Excellent detailed arrival instructions.

Cleaning standards were ok but not great, no evidence of a deep clean between clients e.g. sock found in a bedroom, sweet wrappers on a bedroom floor, crumbs on the kitchen surfaces, crisps and crumbs on the kitchen floor. Glass table in the viewing room dirty, toothpaste on the bathroom mirror etc. Nothing major but altogether they made us feel the apartment has not been cleaned.
Being told in the exit email to clean all the hard surfaces; remove and bag bedding and towels. We would do most of this automatically but I feel we should have been prewarned of these cleaning expectations. We left the apartment far cleaner than we found it and felt we were doing the cleaner's job.
Main bedroom bathroom needs a freshen up and a new shower.
No curtains at the windows!!! You get woken by the sun and have the moon in your face when you are trying to get to sleep.

The property is in an excellent position overlooking the beach, cliffs and gardens at Saltburn. We enjoyed being able to walk from the door along the beach and cliffs as well as the gardens and woods that are in the valleys coming from the beach.
This is one of the best properties we have stayed in for a view especially from the observatory room and balcony! We grew up in this area and remember the Zetland as a hotel so it's been great to stay in one of the properties converted from the hotel rooms especially this one having the best access to the view!
The property has plenty of space and is furnished to a high standard with all the amenities we needed.

Wonderful experience starting at The Observatory in Saltburn by the sea. The location and views were the best in that area, you really couldn't top it!

There were a few very minor niggles but the Stay team were very quick to respond.

Honestly a wonderful and very special place.

We'll definitely be back!

Nice, spacious apartment with a great view! The hosts are very helpful and very easy to get hold of when required.

Two nights of bliss and much needed change of scene, with every amenity we needed. In these early days of lifting of lockdown local businesses are slow and nervous to open. Luckily the local Sainsbury’s has everything you need to stay fed and watered. I’ll be honest you’ll not find a better view to dine from in the whole of Saltburn-by-the-Sea!

the apartment was off a good standard, lots off Victorian features in and around the building the entrance was spacious with easy parking within the court yard a working lift to the observatory being on the top floor we would have struggled with our luggage without the lift
the views from the balcony are spectacular most of our time was spent in the glass domed room at the end off the apartment
a well equipped kitchen beautiful living \ dining room pleasantly furnished that all so had a little balcony
2 good sized bedrooms both with comfy beds fresh and sparkling clean masive bathroom with plenty off hot water great for relaxing after walking most of the day around the beach and town
the area was all so superb nice and quiet with some outstanding walks for all ages or a little drive and lots little bays and coves with cliffs to view the wildlife
we both loved are stay and would recommend a stay in the observatory
we do not want to seem like we are complaining in any way but would like to highlight a few points that need attention
guests should be aware of covid19 rules we received a message from staynorthyorkshire.com about the rules for guests on the eve of our departure listing what we should do this is the full message

Very good

Lovely apartment in a fantastic position.
I think it would benefit from a new kitchen but apart from that it was amazing.

Spectacularly unusual property. I have looked at those windows for 50 years and wondered what i5 was like to be looking out of them........ now I know ....
Curtains! The light at 5 am wakes you up.

Superb location and aspect from the apartment. Very spacious and very well looked after.
Ample provision of all essentials and home comforts. warm and cosy in a very cold windy week.
Would be improved with a bigger bed in the second bedroom.
Kitchen hob could do with updated version

Very impressed with the apartment, clean, comfortable, lovely decor. The views across to the sea were amazing. Car parking, and a lift. Would recommend. Good communication when booking.

Beautiful building, fabulous apartment. Wish we'd stayed longer. Great location.

Spotlessly clean and exactly as described.
Hardly anything - some curtains may have been an idea to keep the bedroom dark.

The apartment was beautiful and the views where incredible, would highly recommend it to anybody. The bath was amazing and the apartment was very big and spacious.
The second bedroom could of done with a larger bed and maybe a TV in there to. The observatory room was missing its chandelier so the lighting in there was poor on a night and the TV didn't work due to no signal.

A lovely stay with a gorgeous view

The apartment is fabulous. Steeped in history and the location with the view is breathtaking. We were lucky to have great weather too
I don't think there was anything we didn't like

great apartment in a great spot.

Very good

The VIEWS from every window. Spacious and comfortable
Nothing to dislike

Great location, parking, easy to find. Brilliant spacious apartment with amazing views. Warm and cosy, comfy beds and great home comforts.

Amazing place to stay

Absolutely beautiful property. Views from the upper level are stunning! Lovely decor throughout. Only stayed for one night as this place is never available! Would have loved to stay for longer.

The location the view of the sea was brilliant. Everything you need for your stay. We had a problem with a smoke alarm bleeping I emailed stay North Yorkshire an within 15 mins a maintenance person came. Calum was very polite and all was sorted very quickly. I would recommend staying here I went with my sister but we are already thinking of going back with our husbands

It’s location & views are amazing !!!
There’s nothing to dislike, although if I were to give advise to improve ...... You provide a coffee machine, which is great but unfortunately you have the wrong pods.
The radiators in the bedrooms need to have a thermostat on so you can control the temp.
The beds were pretty hard but not uncomfortable but you need to invest in some new comfy, fluffy pillows.
Maybe blinds in the bedrooms or provide eye masks, not a great problem in the winter months but summer will be an issue.
Maybe put sofa beds in the observatory & then you can take booking for 4-6 people.

The views were fantastic, the surroundings were peaceful and the apartment was great. Thanks to owners!

La douche

Really lovely few days at the Observatory and although out of season, this didn’t matter as there was enough for us to do plus coming back to the apartment to experience the view from the observatory was just a joy and I spent many hours sat watching the waves roll by. The apartment is very clean, the beds are comfy and we’ll definitely be returning back.

Beautiful apartment with the most amazing views . The facilities are first class and has everything you need for a fantastic stay by the seaside .

Stylish with a cosy homely vibe. Beautiful views of Saltburn. Comfortable and quiet, great directions, easy check in&out. Super fast communication. Close to everywhere we wanted to go! Perfect place to relax!

Home Truths

If you’re travelling with more than one vehicle, you will need to find additional parking nearby. However this can usually be found on Milton Street and no permit is required.

Please also note that the area above the viewing tower is restricted and there is a notice on the stairs within the viewing tower to remind all guests of this.

The fire in the living area is not for use.
