Staithes is the quaint coastal hamlet which was recently named one of Britain’s most beautiful seaside villages. It has high cliffs, winding streets and mismatched cottages bursting with charm.

Staithes is a magnet for art and artists alike. Throughout the village you’ll find amazing painted illusions known as the ‘Painted Illusions Trail’ created by the famous artist Paul Czainski. It is also the home to the impressionist art society, known as Staithes Group, and their work can always be seen dotted around. From the guestbook
Great location, Comfy bed, clean property and a great range of utensils and items needed for in the kitchen (cleaning sprays, pans, plates, cups and glasses).
The stairs not having a bannister on the living room side.
There is one on the wall but I would have felt safer with it being on the living room side
the bedroom were bright and comfortable
the kitchen area was on the small size
the location was perfect and the rooms comfortable and clean. everything you need for a short stay is catered for!
The stairs are quite steep so may be an issue to those less mobile.
Good communication from the owners. Nice and Clean. Recommend.
Location was fab, right in the centre of Staithes, good food nearby, pubs too. The property is recently refurbished, very clean and fresh and care has been taken to ensure all needs are met. The beds are comfy and the bathroom modern and clean. Really good.
Last residents could have washed up a little better, it's easy, there's plenty of hot water, soap, sponges and tea towels provided. The shower was a little slow to drain, so I turned off, to allow it to avoid it over flowing, but the turned it back on after a while to rinse the soap off and scolded my back, I was pretty quick to get out of the stream, I'm used to thermostatic valves so probably my fault, but could have been nasty with a child.
I like the the cottage as it is centrally located. Very close to the port, cafe's and pubs. People are friendly.
The noise of sea gull in the morning. The sun sun shine is too bright from 4am (in summer). Could do with blackout blinds.
Comfortable and clean property
The kettle was broken
Beautiful cottage in the perfect location, just a minutes walk to the beach.
As a family of 4 it had everything we needed- great facilities, comfy beds, lovely decor and an easy check in and out.
could have done with an additional lounge chair rather than all having to sit on the sofa
Good value for money
Cottage was situated in the centre of Stairhes so very handy for the harbour, the pubs and walking.
We didnt like the steep painted stairs to both floors as we're in our mid 60s.
Think it's more suitable for younger people.
Great location and a lovely house. The standard of cleaning was below expectations, but an easy fix for the owners.
Well presented, decorated, very clean compact 3 floor apartment/house located in the main street of the fishing village in Staithes
Further alterations required on all the doors which are too tight (almost binding) on the hinged side leaving a considerable gap on the "handled side" - not necessarily a problem for a couple or family with small children. Furthermore the main entrance door doesn't latch very well as it's warped/bowed to a tremendous degree, reaching up to a couple of inches top/bottom.
The bathroom shares a floor with the 1st floor bedroom and thus is small and as a result no proper basin is fitted and no accompanying wall mirror. A quick hand-wash "basin" is provided which is not adequate. I would suggest replacing toilet with a fitted furniture toilet /basin set if it would fit and still allow decent access to the shower cubical. Otherwise locate a proper basin on the stud wall side rather than window wall.
The location of the house is some distance from the hill top, dropping off luggage and as a result blocking the high street poses some difficulty but wasn't terribly inconvenient in what is a fairly laid back kind of place but prospective visitors should be aware of this especially those who have any mobility difficulties, furthermore, note that parking is available but some distance away and up a rather steep bank.
Lovely cottage, beds cosy . It is on the main street which is in the perfect spot. I would happily stay there again.
Very comfortable accommodation. Nice and warm and comfortable beds. Loved the big tv. Kitchen well equipped although we only used it for tea and coffee.Very close to all amenities....butcher shop next door is open in the morning and sells milk and newspapers if you need them. The shower is a tight squeeze, but lovely hot water.
A lovely cottage in a beautiful village.
Lots of space! Booked last minute and wasn’t disappointed. Thank you for a lovely stay.
We had a fantastic weekend in this wonderful little house, perfect location.
Great location in Staithes, very close to the harbour and other amenities. Cottage itself was comfortable and had all the amenities and facilities we required.
Nothing to criticise or complain about.
Staithes is a little gem the location is excellent and the beds were comfortable. Smart TV and coffee machine. Decor style looks modern
The only place the door touches the frame is where it locks. You can see daylight through the door. This means it's noisy on an evening when the pubs are closing so until 1am.
The cottage sleeps 4 but there is enough crockery for 12 meaning there is nowhere to store food at all!
The stairs are ladder type stairs and a slippery surface so don't go up and down them with socks on. If you have any walking difficulties AVOID this cottage. They are exposed and steep especially to the top floor.
And dust from the stairs falls directly onto the kitchen below including cups etc
The lamp cable on the top floor bedroom had a coating of dust even though this is a touch point. There were some cleanliness issues even though you pay £60 for it but still asked to wipe surfaces on departure.
Its impossible to park outside the cottage to unload because you block traffic in both directions even though you are advised at check in you can park there for unloading for 40mins.
The sink is a wc sink so difficult to wash your face without getting you feet wet.
All of the taps are loose and move around.
Lastly the company managing the property will do nothing to fix the issues as I've seen in other reviews they will just take the money!
Brilliant location less than 1 minute walk from harbour, house is clean and well stocked, although my friend wished there was a cafetiere to make her own choice of coffee! I just found it a little dark in living area and with no personal touches to the decor.
Wouldn’t recommend for 4 persons as way too small downstairs but a good location in the centre of the village
Lovely cottage in a prime location
Great little cottage and even better location!
Great location and a nice property
Property dirty , dusty and had not been cleaned properly prior to our visit
Check in was very easy. We arrived a day later than planned and it was nice knowing I wasn't bothering somebody to get the keys.
The accomodation was clean.
The location was perfect. 10 steps away from the sea and the village pub.
The front door didn't close properly (though it did lock). Cold air got in through the gap. We visited at the end of November, this wouldn't have been a problem in the summer.
All of the kitchen cupboards were full of pots, pans, crockery. This left no where to store bread and other food stuff you wouldn't put in the fridge.
Cosy cottage that was a present - they loved it!
Lovely little spot
Excellent location, right in the heart of Staithes - wonderful little cottage.
It’s clean and in a good location. They charge £49 for cleaning and still ask you to disinfect and clean everything before you leave. Complete inflexibility about check in and inaccurate information given about parking. It was just ok, impersonal and obviously managed by a busy agency. The staircase would be difficult for children or anyone with mobility difficulties.
Great cottage, everything we needed and in an ideal location
Lovely clean, cosy and comfortable cottage in beautiful Staithes. Definitely cosy and family or group of 4 could find it a bit small. The staircase is narrow and could be perhaps difficult for some. The location was perfect but as you are right on the High Street near the Harbour and at busy times you will have noise from people and the odd vehicle passing. None of this detracted at all from a perfect stay.
The cottage was lovely, cosy and very clean. It is surely positioned in one of the best settings in Staithes near the harbour and the variety of conveniences on offer. Would recommend to others
Photos are somewhat misleading
Fab location and such a modern, quirky, cosy, cottage right in the heart of Staithes. We loved it and will definitely be back soon.
Just make sure it has been sorted. We could not stay here due to the condition of the cottage. Terrible damp issue and marked carpets which made it feel un clean.
An excellent compact cottage right in the heart of the village. We’d definitely stay again.
Great location. The heating is lovely and warm.
Could do with a change of carpets and there’s some mould in the shower.
Aside from that a lovely stay in a beautiful spot
Good quiet short break
The decor and space was great, as was the location.
It wasn’t cleaned thoroughly and smelt damp. They’ve clearly had a leak at some point and haven’t done anything about it.
Close to the harbour and local bars and resteraunts
Domestic hot water supply was poor and had to reduce to a trickle to get hot water, needs improving as washing hands is important in these pandemic times .
The location of the cottage is perfect. Right in the heart of the harbour village. All the check in,location details, description and communication were excellent. Beds really comfy.Kitchen and lounge area had everything needed for a short stay.
Lovely little cottage in the middle of a picturesque village. Spotlessly clean. Comfy beds and an excellent pub a 5 minute walk away that service delicious seafood. Instructions for parking simple - just up the hill. Better to travel light so you don't need to drop off cases in the car as it is single car access so tricky if busy.
Lovely coastal walk straight from property. All in all a lovely place to stay.
Very central location, clean, and well-equipped. Staithes is a lovely village to visit, and this accommodation is very close to the harbour.
The house is in a great location and easy access to the harbour and village shops. It is better for a couple to stay in because for 4 people it is quite cramped. The wifi works well throughout.
Property very small , pictures on website very deceiving.
Great little cottage for our two night stay. Very nice to be right on the sea front! The cottage was nicely kept with all we needed. The seagulls are very noisy but this just added to the authenticity of sweet little cottage - a great place to stay.
Fantastic little cottage with everything we needed. Perfect location in the centre of the village. We hope to return!
A complaint was.made about the cleanest of the property
This cottage is in a perfect location to enjoy the beautiful seaside village of Staithes. Both the Cod and Lobster and The George are on your doorstep, and both lovely pubs! It's easy to visit nearby seaside towns in the car, and there's also some lovely costal walks to do from the cottage, the Cleveland Way is on your doorstep! The cottage itself is lovely and quaint and beautifully decorated throughout. Would definitely visit again!

Lovely, clean well equipped cottage. Perfectly placed for our weekend stay in Staithes. Cant fault Harbour Cottage. Bedrooms had plenty of storage. Everything was nice and clean. Cottage is just across from the pub. We will definitely be going back.
Well placed near the harbour.well presented interior
Too small for four people, although it has two bedrooms.Hot water system not efficient.Nowhere to sit outside the property.
Lovely and clean. Great location.
Bathroom was a little small.
Beautiful little cottage in a fab location. All the amenities you could wish for . A great little find
Very clean, well equipped, great use of limited space. Good heating, great shower, nice bedding and towels. Good WiFi, good TV, brilliant location, nicely decorated and very quaint and charming.
No parking nearby, but I knew that in advance. Fiddly hob, loose toilet seat, tricky narrow stairs. Not really suitable for elderly, infirm, or children.
The location, the cottage, the decor everything we wanted for a quiet weekend away.
This cottage was the perfect location for a weekend in Staithes. Very comfortable and right in the middle of the village. We would definitely recommend it.
Nice apartment on three floors on Staithes Main Street, great for a weekend stay. Small bathroom.
Harbour Cottage is right in the centre of lovely Staithes on the cobbled high street, close to the harbour and two pubs as well as a yummy ice cream shop! The cottage is very cute and lovely and light, with a very comfy bed and a very well kitted out kitchen. the oven was too efficient compared to what we were used to! would recommend.
Nicely decorated, perfectly located and clean.
Not really big enough for 4 people. One sofa isn’t enough for everyone to sit on. Couldn’t get induction hob working despite instructions emailed but no response so had to have all meals out. No dishwasher. Pillows too firm.
Nice cottage. facilities good. good location
Not very clean which was not acceptable under current circumstances. Reclraned myself on arrival.
Myself and my partner had a wonderful break in Staithes. It is only a short drive to both Runswick Bay and Saltburn beaches. We hiked along Cleveland Way to Runswick and drove to Saltburn the following day. The property has all the essentials and the TV masquerading as a painting is particularly cool! Would recommend and consider going back in the future!
Cosy comfy and stylish
An excellent gem of a property - so cute and in a great location. It was easy to collect the keys and the property was immaculate.
It was cold until the heaters kicked in - but that wasn't a real problem. Also the walls are thin so you can hear everything going on outside, but just bring some earplugs.
Fantastic location with great amenities. Perfect for a small family
Fabulous location, very pretty and well thought out for the size of the property
The front door was badly warped and there was a terrible draft as it came straight into the kitchen/living area. There was no where to hang coats would have benefited from hooks on the door, too cramped downstairs for four adults.
Location, cleanliness, TV with all of the apps were excellent
Climbing the stairs with no handrail was a problem for my wife due to her mobility problems. Caused her great anxiety on arrival. Managed to cope in the end.
Cottage was more compact than the photos portrayed.
Great location. Easy to get to and lovely and cosy
Stairs were a little challenging!
Lovely little cottage in the heart of the village!
An excellent cottage to stay in the heart of Staithes. The place was really clean and comfortable, with everything we needed. The hosts also provided some nice extras, including milk and coffee. We enjoyed the cottage layout (just be careful on the stairs) with a nice view of the sea/cliff on the top floor. Staithes is really scenic, retaining a lot of its fishing village charm, and has good access to the coastal walks and the rest of north yorkshire coast/moors.
Window upstairs would not stay open
cost of car parking
Great location ideal for a short break by the sea.
The stairs are all open which can be a problem for some, particularly my clumsy partner. Second bedroom was too crampt the room must have been built around the bed?
To say it was called harbour cottage was a laugh, could not see harbour! On main road down to harbour, tourists and cars passing by all the time.
No cheese grater, no egg cups, no rack in shower for shampoos etc, no room in kitchen for food storage etc.
Staithes is beautiful. Harbour Cottage was a great little place to base ourselves.
Thé beds, bedding and towels were gorgeous. Kitchen very well equipped.
Mould in shower. Floor around sofa not very clean.
Great location. Lovely bright little cottage. Clean & homely.
The only negatives I have is the staircase would be no good for young children or elderly people. It is very steep with no banister. Although the cottage was clean there was a lot of dog hairs on the sofa which after being charged £50 cleaning fee I would have expected the sofa to have at least been hoovered.
The cottage is at the bottom of the High Street. Great spot and perfect for a few nights. We had pre booked parking which was fab once we had unloaded. Everything we wanted for a few nights away. Close to the Cleveland Way so perfect for running/walking. Staithes is picturesque and very dog friendly. Safe to say we all had a fab time.
This cottage was in a great location, close to the harbour. The cottage was presented to a fabulous standard. The stairs are steep so people with walking difficulties would need to bear this in mind. We paid £20 (for 2 nights) to use the public car park at the top of the village but there was the option of parking up for 40 minutes and unloading all of our things if we needed to.
We only stayed at Harbour Cottage for one night but it was wonderful. It's really cute and a perfect location right in the village near the sea. It has a well-equipped kitchen, TV (with Netflix, iPlayer etc), hot shower, light rooms, good wifi. The check-in and out was a very easy process and the hosts let us know about parking before arrival so that we could prebook a space. We will definitely stay again so we can get a chance to explore it more! :)
This lovely cottage is in a perfect location. Super warm if you go when the weather is cold. Lovely white bed linen and towels. Simple cottage with an air of chic.
Location is spot on. Xxx. In the centre of Staithes.
Excellent host and cottage would recommend!
Everything was spot on
This little cottage in Staithes is lovely! Really modern, cosy and comfortable. It was great to arrive to a warm house, with milk in the fridge along with the Prosecco we had ordered! We got a takeaway fish platter from the local pub to eat in the house, which was fantastic. We will definitely book again in the future!
right next to the harbour, good facilities
the top bedroom need thicker curtains because it was very light in the morning and the checkout time of 10am is a bit early. Also another couple turned up on our second day as the property was double booked, they had to find alternative accommodation.
Great little cottage. In between two nice pubs. Snug but modern inside. Comfy beds and the frame TV is great. Netflix installed so great while relaxing on the comfy sofa
Very cosy in a great location.
It’s was ok for us but the stairs are very steep and there was no banister rail. So may not suit a young family or the elderly.
Great location, other than parking ( which we knew about in advance)
Modern and clean inside
Everything you need for a short break provides eg cooking utensils etc
Slightly smaller than photos make out
Could possibly do with a blind over window in door
This property is in a great location and was very nicely decorated. It is, as described, a small property but it has everything you need and has been designed well in terms of fitting everything in. It was very handy for exploring Staithes as it is close to everything, beach, pub, cafe, butchers, shops. The beds were very comfortable and the decor very stylish. The top bedroom does not have a door as it is a bit like a mezzanine level so guests would need to be aware of this. Noise can carry easily upstairs as it is a small open plan property. However this wasn’t an issue for us.
Everything, couldn’t fault anything.
Having to leave at 10am, would have liked a later check out.
A brilliant little bolt hole right on the harbour, an amazing location and a fabulous little cottage
Clean tidy well presented
Very easy key pickup as instructions provided by hosts beforehand, good information given about local carparking too.
Very nicely presented I side
Stairs where a little difficult to traverse for the elderly of our party.
Spotlessly clean and very modern, everything appeared very new.
Excellent quality appliances and tv with netflix etc.
Milk in fridge and tea, coffee etc were appreciated.
Great location- Staithes is a beautiful little harbour village and I would love to stay there again.
Stairs are extremely precarious. No hand rail which would be easy to add. I was really glad I had no small children or anyone with any mobility issues.
Seating area would not accommodate 4 people, more suited to a couple. Not really suitable for a young family either due to bedrooms over 2 floors and the risky open stairways.
Distinct lack of storage- no cupboard to store groceries, no drawers in bedroom, nowhere to hang coats downstairs.
We found the mattresses extremely hard and uncomfortable and blackout blinds would help in the bedroom as they are very bright.
Soap in bathroom watered down to point were it wasn’t functional. Shower gel would also be good.
No sea view.
Having tea and milk when we arrived. Very welcome!
Soap was watered down. Very nice rooms but I would have liked a brush so I could sweep the floor before we left
Lovely, clean cosy little cottage! Perfect location
Nothing! Was lovely!
location was great, we enjoyed a nice relaxing weekend in a quiet location that has everything on the door step
Location was spot on
Stairs were difficult
Accommodation was to a high standard and facilities all clean and modern. Wifi excellent strength to say the cottage was in a low position in the bay.
Cottage small but gorgeous
Really sorry to put a slight downer on the property. The mattresses were very uncomfortable but realise everyone is different. The property could take 4 people as two double beds provided but in our opinion other facilities werent adequate for 4 people eg small bathroom, small sofa and small kitchen area.
Perfect for two with a dog
Close to the harbour. The property was very clean and modern. The hosts were very responsive with questions submitted by email answered very promptly.
Smaller than expected, but cosy, and perfectly situated for our needs,:
It is a very sweet cottage and close to the harbour, attractively appointed. Staithes is a most charming and delightful location so we did very much enjoy our time here.
However, given the information claimed there was a sea-view, we were very disappointed that there was no sea-view at all from any window but instead a sense of being cheek-by-jowel with other properties.
Also, given there is no grocery/provisions shop in the village, only at the top at the Co-op, it would have been good if there had been a slightly more generous welcome pack: a loaf of bread perhaps and some eggs to start off guests who may not arrive until the end of the day after a long journey.
Similarly, an extra tea towel and perhaps a very small amount of shower gel and shampoo just to start us off- given the cottage's distance from a local supermarket -would have created a more generous welcome, as well as being practical for guests. We have frequently encountered this when staying in cottages and it just gives a more generous and welcoming feel.
We could not find oven-gloves?
The cottage was clean, modern and had everything we needed and the location was perfect!
The stairs could do with an handrail.
The village is exceptional. The property is typical of the area with essentially one room on each floor and opening onto the street. The location is great near the harbour.
There is no outside space - this is normal in the village and you can sit outside In the street. Everyone stops to chat.
This quaint little cottage is ideally situated near the harbour within a stones throw of great pub .
Harbour cottage is a small, stylish cottage which is situated a stones throw away from Staithes beach/harbour. Its set over three floors, with a very steep staircase, each room is clean, stylish and uses the space well. Overall we had a lovely time our only criticism is that the space is somewhat smaller than we thought but we was a party of four adults and three dogs so appreciate we are larger than most parties :)
A lovely, clean and modern cottage! Perfect location and great value for money.
Had a great stay
A fresh, clean, beautifully appointed, snug cottage on Staithes mainstreet, a stone's throw away from the George and its amazing crab sandwiches to the left and the Cod and Lobster with its lovely hospitality to the right. Wonderful to walk on the harbour beach and across the bridge to the cliffs.
Visitors who have not been to Staithes before have to take on board the pressures on loading/unloading and parking up the hill - not a difficulty in itself, just be aware and don't let it stress you to undo the relaxation and joy of a wonderful stay. We'll be back.
Newly refurbished to high standard. Being a 3 storey cottage space can be an issue and open plan steep stairs may be a problem for some. Location excellent. Would return.
What a gorgeous little cottage in a beautiful village. The place is immaculate and the owners have thought of everything.
Harbour cottage is the perfect location in staithes, just seconds walk from the harbour and pubs/cafes/ shops. It is sparkling clean and stylishly decorated. The beds are super comfy and the living room is a nice place to relax and watch TV or the world go by. The high street is busy so expect lots of passers by and cars but it’s still pleasant enough. The outside storage is handy for bags, wellies, walking boots etc. Great place to stay and very good/ fast communication.
This is our 5th holiday in Staithes and the most luxurious property we have found so far.
The downside is the 'bijoux' size. The mini kitchen area is so small that there is only space for a mini fridge/freezer with no dishwasher and just a mini double induction hob. And the kitchen can't be used at the same time as 4 being at the table.
For a short stay the luxury outweighs this and it is perfect. I look forward to returning. I would not stay for more than 2 nights though for the above reasons.
Harbour cottage is small and cosy. It is spotlessly clean & has a nice modern decor. Nice clean white bed linen & fluffy towels. Great location close to the Cod & Lobster pub & the beach. We really enjoyed our stay. Only negative was the stairs are very steep & there is no handrail, so not ideal for young children or the elderly. That said, it has not put us off rebooking! Just something you may want to consider.
By the very nature of Staithes 16th - 17th Century properties, Harbour Cottage has steep and narrow staircases so we ask all guests to take care when using the stairs.
Due to the nature of the property and it's central location, the cottage is on the cosy side.
There isn't a WC on the ground floor so you will need to take the stairs to the first floor to find the family bathroom.
Please note that the bedroom on the top floor has an open staircase so we ask guests to take care in this space.
