True to its heritage, it is hugely popular for its spas and its exquisite retail opportunities. Due to a boom in spa tourism in the 1800s, Harrogate quickly became known for luxury getaways. Popular with the high society of Victorian Britain, people visited the town in droves for its spa treatments, open space and fresh air. The spa history lives on today as there are a number of luxury spas in the area. If you’re looking for something spectacular, we’d recommend visiting the original Turkish Baths which are located in the Royal Baths building in the centre of town. They have been perfecting the art of relaxation since 1897 so they definitely know a thing or two!
The cobbled streets of Harrogate are lined with cosy bistros, cafes and restaurants. There is an incredible mix of independent places and familiar high street names so that everyone is catered for. Depending on what you fancy eating, a few of our favourite restaurants include The Tannin Level, Scran, The Wild Plum and Burgers and More. If you’re looking for traditional afternoon tea, we’d always recommend Betty’s Cafe Tea Rooms on Parliament Street.
With a long history in coaching inns and public houses, the town has a great selection of pubs and bars. As you wander around Harrogate, you won’t ever be far from real ales or cocktails. For glamorous cocktails, try Manahatta. If you prefer live music, head for The Den.
There’s something for everyone when it comes to shopping too. Whether you’re looking for antiques, arts and crafts, high-end fashion or jewellery – you’ll find plenty of unique stores and boutiques to discover. Art lovers and antique hunters will especially love Montepellier Quarter – the zigzag cobbled streets are filled with gems!
Despite its busy town centre, what is surprising about Harrogate is the vast open space which surrounds it. Known as the Stray, this 200 acres of grass parkland makes the town feel uniquely green and spacious. Perfect for the whole family, you can enjoy the sunshine, eat picnics and play ball games.
Step outside of the centre and you’ll find the Yorkshire Dales on your doorstep. From the valleys to the peaks, there’s lots of varied landscapes to explore. Enjoy long walks, rock climbing, mountain biking, abseiling and much more!
